Three At Last

May 20th, 2010 by Jesse

Thanks to the consistently high turnout at the Tuesday and Thursday workouts, we’ve added a third workout to the schedule.  Starting this week, we’re at LIU every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7:00 - 8:30 a.m.  Now you have no excuse not to swim!

Schedule Change - March 16 and 18

March 15th, 2010 by Jesse

LIU is on spring break, and while all the students are partying in warmer climes, we’re still in Brooklyn.  We’re also still swimming, but because of the break there will be no morning workouts this week.  Instead, we’ll be swimming from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm on Tuesday, March 16 and Thursday, March 18. Come join us!

Holiday Schedule

December 19th, 2009 by Jesse

You may have read recently in the Times about how it’s easier to exercise in the evening than in the morning. Well, here’s your chance to test that theory out.  Due to the holidays over the next two weeks the LIU pool will be closed in the mornings, so the Tuesday workouts for December 22 and 29 will instead take place from 6:30 - 8:00 pm.  There will be no workouts on Thursday, December 24 (Christmas Eve) and December 31 (New Year’s Eve), so all you grinches and party-poopers will have to find some other way to ignore the season.

Those of you looking to start the new year off with a swim can always head out to Coney Island at 1:00 pm on Friday and join the Coney Island Polar Bear Club in their annual New Year’s Day swim. You won’t get that much actual swimming in, but the cold water should at least get your heartbeat up a bit.

One Hour Swim

December 16th, 2009 by Jesse

Registration for the One Hour Swim is now open.  This is an annual event where you swim for one hour in a pool, and a volunteer counts your laps.  The event takes place on two Sundays in January — January 10 at Columbia University, and January 31 at John Jay College.  For full details on this event, see the One Hour Swim Page on the TNYA site.

Upcoming Swim Meet - Colonies Zone Short-Course Meter Championships

November 13th, 2009 by Jesse

The 2009 Colonies Zone Short-Course Meter Championships will be held right here in River City New York at the Flushing Meadows Corona Park Aquatic Complex on Saturday, December 5 and Sunday, December 6. This is the last swim meet of 2009, and is being co-organized by, well, us (that is, TNYA, our parent organization).

Registration closes at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, November 25 (the day before Thanksgiving), and you can sign up online at Metroswim.  Or you can waste your paper, time, and stamps, by downloading the PDF and mailing it in.

Freaky Fridays

September 1st, 2009 by Jesse

There has been a change to our workout schedule.  Tuesday and Thursday morning workouts at LIU will resume on September 8, but there will be no Friday workouts. Remember, if you can’t get enough swimming in Brooklyn, we have plenty of workouts in Manhattan as well.

Vacation Time

August 9th, 2009 by Jesse

Like the Europeans (or the United States Congress) we’re taking most of August off. Not for fun, but because the LIU pool will be closed for a few weeks.  Our last evening workout at LIU will be this Thursday, August 13.  Workouts will resume on Tuesday, September 8, when we move back to our morning schedule (Tuesday, Thursday and Friday [Update 9/1/09: There will be no Friday workouts this fall.], 7:00 - 8:30 am).  In the meantime, check out some of our Manhattan workouts, or just enjoy a few days off.

Oh, Those Summer Nights

May 14th, 2009 by Jesse

It’s almost summer time, and the living is about to get easy, as our workouts are moving from mornings to evenings. (No more 5:00 am wakeups for a few months!) Starting next week we’ll have practice on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, from 6:30 - 8:00 pm.  We’ll be on this schedule until the end of August, and then go back to mornings when LIU’s classes - and full gym hours - start up again in September.  As always, you can check our calendar page for any changes.

Of course, if you still want to swim in the morning, there are plenty of options in Manhattan. And once it warms up a bit and the NYC Parks outdoor pools open, you might find some of getting together for informal workouts at Red Hook, Sunset Park, or other pools.

Night Swimming

December 19th, 2008 by Jesse

LIU is on holiday break now, which means that our regular morning workouts are also on break.  We’ll be back on the regular morning schedule on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 (Inauguration Day!).  In the meantime, we’re adding evening workouts so that everyone can swim without having to travel all the way to Manhattan.  (If you want to swim in Manhattan, check out the various TNYA options over the next two weeks.  Evening workouts will still be at LIU, will still cost the same, and will still start at 7:00 (remember that’s 7:00 pm now).  All the workouts are on our calendar page, and are also listed here for your convenience:

Monday, December 22, 7:00 pm

Monday, December 29, 7:00 pm

Tuesday, January 6, 7:00 pm
Thursday, January 8, 7:00 pm

Tuesday, January 13, 7:00 pm
Thursday, January 15, 7:00 pm

As always, you will need to have your name added to the LIU list in order to attend the workout, so please email info@brooklynswim.org if you are interested in attending.

Signing Up For Brooklyn Masters

December 10th, 2008 by Jesse

Those of you who haven’t yet paid for your workouts can do so by going to TNYA’s online registration form.  Normally signing up as a TNYA member requires an annal fee, but if you signing up for only the Brooklyn swims, that fee is waived for this month, and you can get the whole month’s workouts for only $75.  Just be sure to note “Brooklyn/LIU swimmer only” in the notes section.

This offer is only available for the rest of December.  In January all prices will revert to the rates noted below.
